How we teach

Academic Framework
The Shabdamala Academic framework is based on 3 broad objectives:
Celebrations

Sabdamala is based on a unique blend of Nepalese content and Australian teaching methodologies based on a theme. We focus on one chosen theme each term. The theme chosen reflects aspects of Nepali language, culture and heritage. Once the theme is chosen the academic coordinator prepares a lesson plan and communicates the outcome and purpose to Sabdamala academic staff. The results of academic focus sessions will determine learning outcomes and incorporate required content to develop required reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

1. Using the language

2. Moving between cultures and

3. Making linguistic connections

We use textbooks as references only. The guideline is created by the whole team and prepared by the academic coordinator. Through this process, different activities and tasks are created for the different levels of students. The lessons will involve songs, dance, and cooking lessons for traditional Nepalese food.

We celebrate our different cultural festivals. These celebrations are held after the conclusion of the lesson.

Prior to the commencement of the celebration the teachers give a brief talk explaining the reason and purpose for which the festival is celebrated and what it symbolises in Nepalese culture.

Motivation

Students are allocated classes according to age groups to boost the student interaction levels as they find it more comfortable to deal with the same age group and show eagerness to participate in-class activities.

There is a policy put in practice that is utilised when a behavioural problem arises. The main approach towards problems and obstacles is to manage and handle it calmly and in a positive manner.

We explore the underlining factors that have caused the problem and support not only the students but parents as well we aim to ensure the problem is solved as soon as possible through the positive approach. We believe problem-solving should be conflict-free and be resourceful to maintain positive relations between all parties involved in and with the school.

We hold an annual gala dinner at the end of each year. This is a special day for the academy. Nepal is a fusion of many different dialects, tribes, food, and culture. During this day a buffet dinner is hosted for all attendees. Children perform different songs, dances and dramatic plays representing and encompassing all the many different cultures within Nepal.

Students during this event represent not only the school but also the Nepali community as a whole.

We have a culture of motivation. We motivate all children to participate in different programs in school and community events.
